am satisfied that it is the best and only way of dealing with
it: that it is practically always up to date; that it gives
satisfaction to suitors and solicitors; and, with all the
experience which I have of Court work, I am of opinion that no
better or more effective way of dealing with it could be devised.
It is true that he has sometimes a good deal of time on his
hands owing to postponements and other causes inevitable to the
administration of justice in a small Causes Court; but I do not
think it would be wise for him to make provision for taking
more cases every day than he does now, for it might often lead
to postponements and consequent dissatisfaction of suitors. The
other reason why his work leaves him more leisure than he him...
-self cares for, is the extraordinary rapidity with which he
gets to the bottom of a case this is not to be expected from a
man with less experience than Mr. Wise. As I have already
indicated it is impossible to make use of this time in any
systematic manner, but Mr. Wise when he is disengaged is
>
always ready with his assistance in the Court when it is in-
-dispensable that I should ask for it, and is always ready if
possible to help when he has due notice of the help I want when
I can give it to him in time before he fixes his cases on Friday
morning.
